Your rights as a Victim
If you have been injured as a result of a violent crime, you may be entitled to compensation for the injuries sustained. Western Australia has implemented the Criminal Injuries Compensation Act 2003 which allows for victims of crime to receive victims compensation for the injuries sustained.
Whilst it may not seem to be the easiest task at the time, you must report the crime to the Police as soon as possible following the incident. Time limits may apply and you may not be entitled to compensation if you do not report the incident in a reasonable period of time.
What may I be entitled to?
If you are the victim or are a dependent or close relative of a person fatally injured as a result of an act of violence you may be entitled to compensation.
Under the Criminal Injuries Compensation Act 2003 you may be entitled to compensation for pain and suffering, loss of income or enjoyment of life and any medical expenses you may have paid as a result of your physical or psychological injury.
In some cases, dependents or close relatives may apply for reasonable funeral expenses if the victim was fatally injured as a result of an act of violence.
Time Limits
A claim must be lodged within three (3) years of the date of the offence.
