Victims Compensation Tasmania (TAS)
Your Rights as a Victim
If you or a loved one has been the victim of a violent crime, you may be entitled to compensation.
It can be extremely daunting going to Police about the crime, however, it is essential you advise the Police as soon as possible as the longer you wait, the more difficult it will be for the Police to assist you and it may hinder your chances for compensation for the injuries sustained.
What may I be entitled to?Tasmania has recently implemented the Victims of Crime Assistance Act 2005, so the victim may be able to make a claim for compensation funded by the State Government in the event the offender is unable to pay.
If you have suffered a physical or psychological injury as a result of an act of violence or are the dependent of a victim of crime and the Police believe that a crime had been committed, you may be entitled to compensation. You may also be compensated if you are the parent of a victim under eighteen years, or if you witness a violent crime.
Time LimitsIf you are the victim of a crime, you have three (3) years from the date of the offence to lodge a claim. If the victim of the crime is under eighteen (18) years at the time, the claim must be lodged within three (3) years of the victim's eighteenth birthday.
Time extensions may be granted in some cases, contact Legal Injury today if your injuries fall outside this time limit to discuss your options.
